We have always considered blending to be the art of winemaking. In a twist on this practice we retained barrels of our favorite wines from four vintages with the intention of putting together a unique blend. The blend (80% Zinfandel) finally was put together in the fall of 2011. The oldest wine was 2007 Zinfandel from Ricetti, Valenti and Vassar vineyards. 2008 contributed Petite Sirah from Vassar and Nate’s Vineyards, and Zins from Ricetti and Perli vineyards. The selection from 2009 was the Valenti Ranch Zin. Finally, lesser amounts of 2010 Petite Sirah and Carrignane from Vittorio’s Vineyard were added to highlight brightness and provide acidity. The result is a very complex wine with a plush mouth feel and an impression of an aged wine that has vibrancy and a long life ahead of it. The nose has white pepper, tobacco and chocolate. The flavors are of plum and black currant with hints of tobacco and menthol leading into a chocolate finish.
